Having successfully completed the Reconnect phase: clarifying Who Am I? and Why Am I Here?: the journey shifts to Refocus. This is the vital stage of the self-coaching cycle where you translate internal clarity into intentional external action.
The challenge for most leaders is not knowing what to do, but stopping themselves from doing too much. Leaders typically spread themselves too thinly across numerous tasks and relationships, often feeling reactive and lacking the time to focus on strategy.
The Refocus stage provides the framework to break this cycle by adopting the disciplined pursuit of less. It guides you to prioritize what is truly essential, reinforce trust in key relationships, proactively build accountability, and finally, carve out the mental space necessary for high-quality decision-making. This stage enables you to consciously choose where to expend your energy, ensuring your actions are in service of your deepest purpose and dreams.
Key Disciplines of Refocus
The Refocus phase includes four core disciplines, moving you from diffusion to clarity:
What Is Essential? Eliminating low-value activities and concentrating solely on the few things that you, and only you, can do to achieve success. This involves finding delight in saying no to non-essential requests.
Trust: Building strong, trust-based relationships with key stakeholders, those who have a stake in your future success. This is achieved through vulnerability and proactive investment in relationships.
Accountability: Developing habits to hold yourself and others to account for commitments, managing triggers, and avoiding the temptation to "coast".
Creating Space: Intentionally carving out time to think, reflect, connect, and simply be, ensuring you move from constantly doing to consciously leading.
By mastering these disciplines, you ensure you are focused on achieving the essential things that need to get done, moving you closer to living your personal and professional dreams.
