Mental Fitness is a state of mind that ensures positive attitudes flow and you feel in tip-top shape. It has less to do with intelligence and more to do with positive thinking and self-affirmations. For the self-coaching leader in the Regenerate phase, this discipline is crucial because low mental fitness, driven by fears and self-limiting beliefs, holds leaders back from fulfilling their potential.
Many successful leaders suffer from underlying fears that fuel negative mindsets, causing inconsistent behavior and poor decision-making.
Confronting Limiting Beliefs
Mental fitness requires moving from a judgmental, negative mindset (driven by Saboteurs) to a positive perspective (driven by the Inner Sage).
The Judge and Accomplice Saboteurs: The Judge is the inner critic that causes disappointment, anger, and anxiety by judging ourselves, others, and situations. The Judge is supported by Accomplice Saboteurs, such as the Hyper-Achiever, Controller, or Pleaser, which restrict performance through negative thought patterns derived from childhood survival mechanisms.
Self-Limiting Beliefs: These are statements leaders believe to be true (e.g., "I need to retain control" or "I need to be the smartest person in the room"). Leaders must identify evidence for and against these beliefs to understand their irrationality and create coping strategies.
Unpacking Deep Fears: Behind every self-limiting belief is a deeper, often subconscious, fear (e.g., fear of Failure, Conflict, or Looking Stupid). These irrational fears inhibit necessary behaviors like risk-taking or delegation.
The Five Sage Powers: These powers help leaders turn negative thoughts into positive action: Empathise, Explore (observe without judgment), Innovate (build on new ideas), Navigate (look back from the end of life to clarify choices), and Activate (move toward positive action).
Conclusion: Activating the Inner Sage
By keeping a journal of negative thoughts and identifying the most dominant Saboteurs, leaders gain self-awareness and can choose to respond using the positive frame of the Inner Sage. Overcoming deep fears often requires professional support, but managing the daily Saboteurs allows a leader to make decisions from a positive perspective, leading to longer-term success and higher self-confidence.
3 Essential Self-Coaching Questions
When my inner critic (The Judge) speaks, which Accomplice Saboteur (e.g., Controller, Pleaser, Victim) is providing the loudest support?
What is one self-limiting belief I hold that is supported by faulty evidence, and what is the opposing, factual evidence I can focus on today?
The next time I feel triggered, how can I use the Sage Power of 'Explore' to pause and simply observe the situation without judgment?
Additional Frameworks and Concepts to Explore
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): A therapy approach focused on managing problems by changing the way you think and behave. CBT is effective for fears and anxieties, using incremental steps to overcome a fear (e.g., gradual exposure).
Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) Desensitization: A technique that helps a person safely confront deep fears by disassociating from the traumatic experience (viewing it as an observer, not a participant) to reduce its powerful emotional impact.
